How to choose the right pump

Pump guide step 1 of 4: Don't choose a pump on litres per hour alone. The higher your pump has to push water, the less water comes out. How high does the water need to travel? Measure straight up from the water surface to the highest point where water comes out. Rule of thumb: choose a pump whose maximum head is at least 1.5x your measured height.

Pump guide step 2 of 4: How strong should the water flow? Picture the look you want first. That tells you how many litres per hour (L/h) you need. Gentle trickle: lower L/h. Steady flow: medium L/h. Strong waterfall: higher L/h. Wider outlet, more flow needed: a 60 cm waterfall lip needs far more litres per hour than a 10 cm spout.

Pump guide step 3 of 4: How far does the water travel? Every metre of pipe and every bend slows the water down. Narrow pipes slow it even more. Pump far from the outlet, or lots of bends? Choose a little more pump capacity than you think you need. Make sure your tubing fits: check the pump's outlet size on the product page.

Pump guide step 4 of 4: Match the pump to your feature. Small tabletop or pot: low flow. Small fountain: flow + head height. Medium water feature: head height + L/h. Wall spout: head height + pipe restriction. Multi-tier fountain: higher head + spare capacity. Waterfall: L/h + waterfall width. Large feature: high L/h + high head.

Size guide

Waterhouse pond pump size guide 1 of 3: Find the right pump for you. Measure how high the water must rise, pick the first green bar that passes your height, and for more flow go a row or two lower. Bar chart of the WH150 to WH30000 pumps showing strong flow and maximum height for each, and what each is ideal for, from pots and bird baths up to 30 cm to ponds and streams up to 4.7 m.

Waterhouse pond pump size guide 2 of 3: Tabletop to medium features. Pots, bird baths, small fountains and wall spouts up to about 1.2 m. Table of the WH150 to WH1100 pumps with max flow, max height, ideal height, power, cable length and tubing sizes. WH620 vs WH750: same flow, but the WH750 lifts higher. Fittings included.
