This Gravity Fed Pond Bio Filter is designed to make pond filtration easier to understand and maintain, even if you’re setting up a pond filtration system for the first time.

The basic idea is simple: a pond pump sends dirty pond water into the filter, the water passes through several stages of filtration, and the cleaned water flows back to the pond by gravity. Because the return relies on gravity, the filter should be positioned so its outlet can flow freely back into the pond.

Inside the filter are multiple chambers containing different types of filter media. These work together to provide both mechanical and biological filtration.

The foam media physically traps leaves, dirt, suspended particles and other debris carried in from the pond. At the same time, the biological filter media provides a large surface area where beneficial bacteria can establish. These bacteria help break down organic waste naturally, supporting cleaner, healthier pond water.

How the Filtration Process Works

1. Pond water enters the filter
A separate pond pump pushes water from the pond into the filter through the inlet.

2. Debris is captured
Water travels through the filter chambers and foam media, which help remove progressively smaller particles and debris.

3. Biological filtration takes place
The biological media gives beneficial bacteria somewhere to colonise, helping process organic waste within the pond system.

4. Filtered water returns to the pond
Once the water has travelled through the filtration stages, it leaves through the large outlet and returns to the pond by gravity.

This multi-chamber design provides a large filtration capacity while keeping the different filtration stages organised and accessible for cleaning.
